Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise as just a young girl. Aunt Denise worked as an overnight nursing assistant in order to give her the chance to learn about art and literature, or even theater. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learnt by doing the art of being a good vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a social consciousness and taught DuVernay how to convey messages through artwork. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her youth, however she was able to spend summers with her father's extended family in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. Her first job was as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to watch the home of a member of the jury and examine their junk. Her tasks to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to pursue a career in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio, right after graduating from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
